Coding for Good

Coding for Good is a technology-based entrepreneurship project in which youth are taught to build websites for small businesses. This project is specifically for Black youth, who comprise an historically underrepresented community in the fields of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM).

Black youth ages 16 to 19 will receive guided instruction on website design and entrepreneurship from experienced and credentialed professionals. The project will begin March 18, 2023 and end April 29, 2023. Youth will meet in-person on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 1:15 pm and virtually from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Tuesdays.

Opportunity Awaits

Computer occupations are projected to be in high demand over the next 10 years due to continued growth in the digital economy. Employment for web developers and digital designers is expected to grow at 12% between 2019 and 2029. About 17,900 openings for web developers and digital designers are projected each year, on average, over the 10-year period. Many of these openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

Our Response

To help cultivate interest and prepare Black youth for computer occupations and to address STEAM education disparities, the Arts and Sciences Center offers a participatory, youth-centered website design project using a cross-collaborative community-based approach.

Our Impact

Nurturing Technical Proficiency and Creativity

At the heart of our Coding for Good Program lies a comprehensive educational experience that empowers youth with the tools to build impactful websites. Participants have been introduced to the versatility of WordPress, mastering its capabilities to develop websites that seamlessly merge functionality with aesthetics. Beyond this, these aspiring designers have also received instruction in the fundamental languages of web design – HTML and CSS. Armed with this knowledge, they’ve acquired the prowess to design websites from scratch, fashioning intricate layouts and captivating visuals that reflect their creativity.

Unveiling Tangible Outcomes

The culmination of these efforts has led to tangible outcomes that testify to the power of the Coding for Good Program. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, our talented participants have meticulously crafted mobile-responsive websites for local South Carolina small business owners. These websites not only serve as digital storefronts but as vibrant hubs that engage and connect with the community. Each image you tap opens a door to a unique digital realm, a testament to the fusion of technical skill and creative ingenuity. Through these websites, the boundary between innovation and community has been bridged, forging lasting relationships between young designers and the businesses they’ve empowered. As you explore the following pages, you’ll witness firsthand the impact of their dedication and the transformation of digital landscapes into thriving online communities.
