We're Not Just Another Nonprofit Organization.
The Arts and Sciences Center is a nonprofit organization that primarily serves Black children and youth, ages 8 to 21, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and the communities of Orangeburg County. Our aim is to “STEM”ulate learning and career interest in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM). We do this by integrating hands-on activities that are age and developmentally appropriate and relevant to the young people we serve. Ultimately, we aspire to encourage creativity in today’s youth to inspire tomorrow’s innovation.
What are the benefits of STEAM education?
STEAM education is important because it prepares youth to be critical thinkers, make learning connections, and be competitive in today’s job market. This is done through the promotion of creativity, confidence building, engaged learning, and problem solving.
Creativity
Youth are encouraged to conceptualize and generate new ideas, processes, and products to solve real-world problems.
Confidence
Through opportunity, curiosity, and encouragement, youth acquire the self-assurance to challenge and explore new paths.
Engaged Learning
Through guided learning, inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking, youth learning experiences are enhanced.
Problem Solving
Youth learn the importance of collaborating, learning from mistakes, and troubleshooting to quickly assess and resolve challenges.

Are Black
We are STEAM!
For centuries, Black people and other historically underrepresented communities of the STEAM industry have made significant contributions to society through the arts and sciences. These contributions have simplified life and have provided an effective and artistic means to communicate and explore culture. Like our representation, our contributions to STEAM and to the world sometimes go unnoticed. Our children and their future deserve better.
